What will you change to improve Wilson’s quality of life?
Thank you for your question. My vision as Sheriff is to improve the quality of life for every resident of Wilson County through modern, community-centered law enforcement. That means not only reducing crime, but also strengthening trust, protecting families, and ensuring we treat every person and even our animals, with dignity and care.I will modernize the Sheriff’s Office by investing in current technology, stronger case-management systems, and advanced training. Deputies will receive expanded instruction in de-escalation, crisis intervention, negotiations, and community engagement, along with stronger supervision and accountability. This ensures more professional policing, safer encounters, and greater public trust. The creation of a Dedicated Criminal Interdiction Team will ultimately have an impact on the criminal activity within our county. This specialized traffic and highway unit will be trained to identify and stop drug trafficking, human trafficking, weapons, money laundering, kidnapping, and organized crime. So much of the deadly drugs and crime affecting our county is transported along our highways. By intercepting those criminals and seizing their contraband before they reach our neighborhoods will protect families and save lives. Any seized assets will be reinvested into training and equipment to reduce the burden on taxpayers.I will focus on reducing repeat and violent offenders. I will strengthen partnerships with state and federal agencies and work closely with U.S. Attorneys to move serious cases into federal court when appropriate. Violent criminals and habitual offenders will be prioritized, while we also coordinate with state courts, state probation, and local treatment providers to break the cycle of crime for those struggling with addiction. Also, Building community trust will be a top priority. This will be accomplished by increasing deputy visibility in neighborhoods, schools, and businesses. Expanding crime-prevention, being active in the community and increasing the enforcement of local ordinances and state law will allow us to maintain transparency. Communication with the public in person and through social media outlets will allow the citizens to be informed. I will also create community advisory input so every citizen has a voice in public safety.Improving how the Sheriff’s Office responds to mental-health and crisis calls by partnering with mental-health professionals for current training will ultimately improve how these situations are handled. These partnerships and training will provide a safe and compassionate outcome. Our youth are the future of Wilson County, and investing in them is one of the most important things we can do. I will create youth mentoring and juvenile-prevention programs. Working with schools, churches, and nonprofits to provide early intervention and positive opportunities will help keep young people on the right path.I am committed to immediately addressing the serious concerns at the Wilson County Animal Shelter. Quality of life includes how we treat animals. As Sheriff, I will ensure the shelter operates with transparency, humane standards, and accountability. I will conduct a full operational review, establish clear policies for care and medical treatment, restore partnerships with nonprofits and rescues, expand volunteer programs, hold adoption events to reduce overcrowding, and provide training in animal-welfare laws. Anyone responsible for mismanagement or neglect will be held accountable. In short, my goal is to lead a Sheriff’s Office that is professional, compassionate, transparent, and focused on making Wilson County a safer and better place to live and work for everyone. Thanks for your interest in my campaign and your question.Bobby KnightCandidate for Sheriff
